Modal Trigger Columbia University Getty Creative A disturbing wave of seven suicides and likely drug overdoses has swept through Columbia University so far this school year — and students say fiercely competitive academics and inadequate campus counseling programs are in large part to blame. They include a promising year-old journalist, a year-old Navy veteran, a Moroccan student and an year-old freshman from Brookfield, Missouri, named Taylor Gilpin Wallace. He was surrounded by some of the brightest young minds on Earth — kids who were already starting businesses and nonprofits, or excelling in the arts. Making it all worse, he suffered from depression. Basulto struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts at Columbia, she said. But clearly, the administration is grappling with the tragedies. As students died over the course of five months, Dean James Valentini, vice president for undergraduate education, had issued carefully-worded condolence emails on the lost students. The emails largely avoided the words suicide and drugs, and each featured similar boilerplate lists of counseling resources.
Children of church members were attending college, only to reject the faith of their parents. Jones later recalled that in , his friend William Jennings Bryan had leaned over to him at a Bible conference service in Winona Lake, Indiana , and said, “If schools and colleges do not quit teaching evolution as a fact, we are going to become a nation of atheists.
Jones said that although he had been averse to naming the school after himself, his friends overcame his reluctance “with the argument that the school would be called by that name because of my connection with it, and to attempt to give it any other name would confuse the people. Both time and place were inauspicious. The Florida land boom had peaked in , and a hurricane in September further reduced land values.
The Great Depression followed hard on its heels.

Born in , he spent his childhood in Chicago and, from age six, grew up in Hastings-on Hudson, N. He attended public schools, earned his B. He has written books on growth, unemployment theory, recessions, stagnation, inclusion, rewarding work, dynamism, indigenous innovation and the good economy. In that framework, he studied wage-setting, mark-up rules, slow recoveries and over-shooting. This served to underpin Keynesian tenet that say a cut in the money supply will not merely cause prices and wages to drop with no prolonged effect on employment.
Thus, the big job losses in the US, UK and France result from the pile-up of wealth and puny investment, both stemming from the slowdown of productivity growth. Now he has worked to put economics on a new foundation. Powerful innovation over more than a century alters the nature of the advanced economies: Having higher income or wealth matters less. As his book Rewarding Work begins to argue, what matters more are non-material rewards of work: His book Mass Flourishing remarks that cavemen had the ability to imagine new things and the zeal to create them.
The challenge was to resolve these issues while continuing to posit the elementary rationality that economics traditionally ascribed to workers, consumers and firms. In a paper, the economy’s firms face a management problem, costly employee turnover, and a firm’s wage policy aims to balance payroll cost against turnover cost.
In a paper, Phelps sketched an economy of widely separated “islands” in which workers have to decide whether to accept the local market wage or to move on.
The World at War: Many of the young soldiers mobilized into the Japanese army by the early s came from the rural areas, where the effects of the depression were devastating and poverty was widespread. Their commitment to the military effort to expand Japanese territory to achieve economic security can be understood partly in these terms.

In this post, I go over my experience: Halloween in Medellin is fun. I first wrote this post about my dating experience in Medellin back in April of Places frequented by tourists in Medellin are more saturated with foreigners than before. I am aware of the underworld of sex tourism and prostitution in Colombia and I know that there are many strip clubs and brothels in Medellin; however, strippers and pros are not the types of girls that I date, nor is it something I would like to promote; therefore, I will not be referring to that in this post.
Also, this is a narrative of my own experiences. It is not meant to be a guide or advice for other guys. Lastly, I do not intend to degrade or belittle women. Medellin just happens to have many of them. My situation is a little different than most foreigners here in Colombia. At first glance, Medellin women do not perceive me as a foreigner due to the way I look.
It is an immediate sense of curiosity that some Colombian women have upon meeting a foreigner.

Wikimedia Commons As the opioid epidemic rages in the U. And according to a new study, baby boomers and millennials are at significantly higher risk. The team selected as the start date due to changes in drug classification that would have made reconciling pre- and post data difficult. During that period, drug overdose deaths per , people increased from 4.
And according to their results, individuals born between and the heart of the baby boomer generation have a significantly higher risk of death from overdose of both prescription opioids and heroin. The team also found that younger Americans, specifically those born between and most of whom would be considered millenials , had a higher risk of overdose death from heroin. The generational uptick in risk appeared to be the same for both men and women. For example, the authors note that the type of drug is often not specified on an overdose death certificate, which means the number of deaths from both prescription opioids and the illicit drugs heroin and fentanyl are likely higher.
And across the country, Gen Xers, accustomed to being overlooked, shrugged and got on with their day.

Columbia Main Series, Part 7: October 23, Columbia released its first stereo albums in the summer of All of the first dozen or so were stereo versions of albums already available in mono. As far as the catalog numbering system went, there was no correlation between mono and stereo versions for the first few years. Columbia started a new CS series for the stereo releases, and figuring the stereo releases as some sort of specialty niche records, didn’t bother to link the mono and stereo numbers for two years.
From that point, the stereo numbers were exactly higher than the mono, or to put it simply, the last two digits in the respective catalog series’ matched. Mono albums on this page had the “six eye” label, with the deep groove far left. Promotional albums had a white label with red print near left. The stereo counterparts of the “six eye” label are shown at far left, with the promotional stereo label shown at near left. These early stereo issues also had the deep groove. We would appreciate any additions or corrections to this discography.
Just send them to us via e-mail. All of these records are out of print and we have none of these records for sale.

Ross in the year It was started on a very small capital, but Mr. Ross saw the possibilities ahead and believed St. Helens would grow and therefore the bank would grow. The first few years were a struggle and Mr. Ross had to do considerable insurance and other work to keep things going but business was increasing and the manner in which it was handled inspired the confidence of its depositors.
During the panicky times when other banks paid out clearing house certificates, and husbanded their stock of gold and silver, it was not necessary for the bank here to pay out anything but cash.

The World at War: Economic Background. While the United States was still struggling to emerge from the Great Depression at the end of the s, and would do so partly because of the war, Japan had emerged from its own period of depression, which had begun in , by the mids.
The authors just, for whatever reason, decided not to draw attention to them. For instance, here’s one of the key tables in their paper from which they derived one of the primary findings statements made in the abstract: The basic results, by gender, are shown in Table III, columns 1 and 2. There is a clear difference in the attribute weights on attractiveness and intelligence: This is consistent with the predictions of both the evolutionary and social structure theories of mate selection described in the introduction.
The magnitudes of these differences are large. Each additional attractiveness point on a point scale increases male likelihood of saying Yes by 2. This implies that the effect of physical attractiveness is 18 percent higher for males. The implied effect of intelligence on the probability of Yes is 4. We look at the statistical significance of these differences in column 3 , where we pool all subjects and include an interaction term RatingMale for each attribute; for both attractiveness and intelligence, the interaction term is significant at the 5 percent level.

It was the first permanent IBM installation in the world to do scientific work Comrie’s Greenwich setup had not been permanent. In late , Eckert presented a paper on this work to the American Astronomical Society. A seemingly mundane but significant aspect of this work was the new ability to feed the result of one computation into the next and print the results of these calculations directly, thus eliminating the transcription errors that were common in astronomical and lunar tables [ 17 ].
To illustrate with a quote from Kay Antonelli, University of Pennsylvania, referring to her wartime work [ 34 ], “We did have desk calculators at that time, mechanical and driven with electric motors, that could do simple arithmetic. You’d do a multiplication and when the answer appeared, you had to write it down to reenter it into the machine to do the next calculation. We were preparing a firing table for each gun, with maybe 1, simple trajectories.

Your year-old son is dating a year-old female classmate — no big deal, right? Take, for example, the widely publicized case of Marcus Dwayne Dixon, an year-old high school honor student and star football player who had sex with a year-old female classmate. She claimed it was rape, he claimed it was consensual, and a jury acquitted him of the charges. However, because of their age difference, the jury still found Dixon guilty of statutory rape and aggravated child molestation, and sentenced him to a mandatory 10 years in prison under Georgia law.
He walked out of prison on May 3, , at age 19, a free man. Upon his release from prison, Dixon enrolled at Hampton University in Virginia with a football scholarship.
